WESTSIDE BANNERS

This project demonstrates design's profound ability to honor cultural heritage and amplify overlooked communities. Through collaborative methodology using polls, surveys, and deep resident engagement, the banners authentically capture Kansas City's Westside neighborhood and its rich Mexican American legacy.

Seven thoughtfully illustrated blocks weave together meaningful symbols from lowriders to Day of the Dead imagery, creating visual storytelling that deeply resonates with residents. The community's emotional response of "We have never been recognized by the city... this almost brings me to tears" reveals design's transformative power to validate generational stories, preserve cultural significance, and foster genuine neighborhood pride through authentic representation.
